So, I've finally got my website almost ready to go live. The question is, where do I host it? There's so many web hosting sites out there I don't know where to start.

Price is paramount, since my artwork isn't currently making any money and I only have a part time job.

I am based in the Uk, and my domain is jenberry.co.uk. My website is written in PHP5.3 with a MySQL5.1 database and is currently only 160MiB in size although I'll need room to expand. I want it to be easy to synchronise the files on the website with any changes I make offline (using, for example, rsync), and it would be useful if they had the phpmyadmin tool.

I'd be grateful if anyone could share any advice or experience about finding web hosts.

Thanks
Jen

What to do with premium membership?

So I've just been given membership by :iconmeihua: for winnig the :iconbirds-club: contest (thanks a lot.)
Not to seem ungrateful, but I don't really know what to do with it. So I've added a sitback slideshow to my page, but other than that...

Art isn't just about the picture, the presentation and viewers experience is as much a part of art. Some pictures are best viewed small, like speed paints, and pictures where the whole matters. Some pictures are best viewed large, so that they fill the screen and draw the viewer into it. Some pictures are very long, such as tutorials, and comics, and the length should not be restricted.

!Give back the artist's power over their own art!

Here's an example of the problem:

Edit: hooray, DA redeem themselves. I knew we could count on them.

Currently my gallery is split into fantasy and non fantasy, and I don't think that adequately reflects my range of material, so I need to reorganise it to better sell myself. Is subject matter as important as medium or style? I'm beginning to think not. So I was thinking I should organise it into the following folders:

Digital Artworks
Traditional Artworks
Pen pictures (the ones that are currently on sale, see previous journal entry)
Digital concept sketches
Traditional concept sketches
Original Charcters
Commissions and gift art

Where the last two overlap with the previous.
But then if I'm going to have overlapping categories, why not have ones for animals, and fantasy as well? But I think its best to keep them to a minimum. What do you think?

Ok, so I'd like to get some commissions, and since I'm jobless at the moment I feel my time isn't worth so much, hence I can offer you commissions at almost half the price! How good is that? Sale lasts one week, so the closing date for requests is Wednesday 10th March. (This deadline may be extended or reduced depending on interest.)

The sale is on my pen work of animals which normally costs £25-£35 (+p&p), I will now do them for £15-£20, so this is a great time to get a portrait of your pet or just your favorite animal. The sale also includes my photoshop black & white sketches, normally £40 nunt.deviantart.com/art/Demon-… I will now do them for £20 and they aren't restricted to animals.

Examples of pen work:
Monochrome A4, normally £25, now £15.
nunt.deviantart.com/art/Cape-b… nunt.deviantart.com/art/Juana-… nunt.deviantart.com/art/Sassy-… nunt.deviantart.com/art/Cat-32… nunt.deviantart.com/art/Snoopy… nunt.deviantart.com/art/Puppy-… nunt.deviantart.com/art/Margay… nunt.deviantart.com/art/Bighor… nunt.deviantart.com/art/Fox-11…

Full colour A4, normally £30, now £17.
nunt.deviantart.com/art/Tilly-… nunt.deviantart.com/art/Preeni…

Monochrome A3, normally £30, now £17.
nunt.deviantart.com/art/Jacobi…

Full colour A3, normally £35, now £20
No examples yet, but you get the idea.

You can also buy these existing originals for £10:
nunt.deviantart.com/art/Snoopy… nunt.deviantart.com/art/Puppy-… nunt.deviantart.com/art/Margay… nunt.deviantart.com/art/Bighor… nunt.deviantart.com/art/Preeni…

I may also consider taking on other commissions at a reduced rate. If you let me know what you are after I'll give you a quote

Hi all, since I'm jobless and therefore have free time, I've set myself the challenge of doing one piece of artwork per day. I'm currently in my third week and although I've missed some days out, I did manage to do 7 each week. I will be uploading them to my scraps unless there's a particularly good one.
I've mostly been working on drawing faces, but there is other stuff too
week 1: nunt.deviantart.com/art/1-artw…
week 2: nunt.deviantart.com/art/1-artw…
week 3: nunt.deviantart.com/art/1-artw…
week 4: nunt.deviantart.com/art/One-ar…

can anyone tell me how thumbnails work? Do you have to have a subscription or something? 1 artwork per day week 1 by nunt

I thought my photos were cluttering up my DA space a bit, so I decided to make a separate account for them photonunt.deviantart.com . I will soon be deleting all my photos from this account, I apologise to those of you who have favorited them n stuff but it is better this way.

I thought you might all like to know that I have now graduated from Cambridge University with a BA honors in zoology, grade 2.1. It is everything I was hoping for so I am happy. Going to Cambridge, it's easy to lose perspective, but I realize that I have a very good degree from one of the top universities in the country, if not the world. I have enjoyed my time there a lot, and am very sad to be leaving all those wonderful people I've met and called friend. You can't get rid of me so easily though, I'll be back next month for those of you still there in the holidays, and I'll be visiting next year, especially since my boyfriend will still be there doing his fourth year. As for my plans, I'm doing several voluntary research assistant placements, one in Cambridge in July, one in Spain in September, and one in South Africa in October and November. So I'm rather exited, and rather busy. But despite this, I will probably still have more time than I did at university, so in theory I'll get some more artwork done, so keep a look out.

I now have a shiny new website :) www.jenberry.co.uk
ok, it's a bit simple, but I created it using Domain Monster's templates (in about an hour) so I could put it up for free. Anyway, it makes me happy. Sometime soon I'll get around to learning how websites work so I can create my own.

Ok, I need to decide on a domain name... its so hard. I could be jenberry .org.uk or jenberryart .com but that just seems so dull. thedarkestberry .com, or even darkestberry.com is quite funny, but I'm not sure it's really any good for an artist site. I was thinking of something along the lines of crimsonangel or demonicangel or dragonspine but they are a bit too cliche, and I don't want to limit myself to fantasy artwork. I also need to bear in mind that it will form part of my e-mail address. Jen@ JenBerryArt. com just doesn't have any flair, but I guess it is to the point.Any ideas?

I think this picture is finally finished nunt.deviantart.com/art/Pepper… complete with walkthrough nunt.deviantart.com/art/walkth…

This was done as a tribute to the late Mike Majerus, who researched and taught in the genetics department here at Cambridge university. I don't think I ever met him, since he fell ill before he was due to lecture us, but he did some great work and I was saddened to hear of his death. His book on melanism got me through my first term project. I felt the need to pay my respects in some way, so I turned to my art.

Although I would be lying if I said this was totally selfless, I needed to make a really good piece of artwork for my portfolio which I felt was a bit outdated and didn't display my current ability. I also thought that if they did display the image it would give me exposure which I badly need.

I am very happy with it, I think it's captured what I wanted, although I always think that when I finish a piece, I only start to see the flaws in it later on. Hopefully that means I am getting better.

Anyway, I hope you like it.

My site is now up to date. Hurray. I am also starting to make some of my art available as prints and other things. I shall let you know when I've finished doing that. I've done it with all my photos but I'm still uploading better quality pictures of my artwork so they can be made into prints.
